Compulsory Pilotage Area
(a) Zone A – Outer
Applicable to vessels greater than 15,000 GT
The Outer Compulsory Pilotage Area consists of all navigable waters within a line drawn between the following coordinates:
- Latitude 56°20′00″N, Longitude 60°30′00″W
- Latitude 56°26.5′00″N, Longitude 61°10′00″W
- Latitude 56°22.7′00″N, Longitude 61°10′00″W
- Latitude 56°17.5′00″N, Longitude 60°30′00″W
Outer Pilot Boarding Station (PBS):
Approximately 55 nautical miles to berth
Note: For vessels exceeding 15,000 GT, the Pilot may be required to embark the vessel from the vessel’s last port of call or from the nearest Compulsory Pilot Boarding Station (PBS) prior to arrival at Voisey’s Bay.
(b) Zone B – Inner
Applicable to vessels less than 15,000 GT
The Inner Compulsory Pilotage Area consists of all navigable waters adjacent to the Akuliakatak Peninsula between:
- Latitude 56°22.7′00″N and 56°26.5′00″N
- West of Longitude 61°10′00″W
Inner Pilot Boarding Station (PBS):
Approximately 32 nautical miles to berth
Pilot Order Requirements
Advance Notice Requirements
A minimum of seven (7) days’ advance notice is required to confirm a Pilot order for Voisey’s Bay assignments. A minimum of ten (10) days’ notice is preferred to allow adequate time for Pilot travel arrangements.
Pilots are not based within the Voisey’s Bay district and must be transported into the area by air. Flight arrangements require a minimum of seven (7) days’ advance notice to secure available bookings.

Initial Pilot Order:
- Minimum seven (7) days’ advance notice of arrival is required.
- Estimated departure time must be provided with the arrival request.
Confirmation:
- Confirmed as arranged with the Pilot, or
- Seven (7) days’ notice is required where the vessel is not expected to complete a quick turnaround.
