Suspension of Compulsory Pilotage Service for Miramichi, NB
The pilotage service is no longer available in the compulsory pilotage area of Miramichi, NB. The navigation channel is deficient in width, depth, and alignment and does not meet the recommended guidelines for the accommodation of commercial traffic. The process of infilling in the Miramichi River is continuous therefore:
(1) local knowledge may be incomplete or not up to date at any time;
(2) ongoing infilling may exceed the currency of sounding surveys at any time; and
(3) the fixed and floating aids to navigation may not provide the degree of accuracy required by certified masters of commercial vessels to safely navigate the channel.
Any further commercial use of the waterway in its current condition by vessels is solely at the discretion of the vessel mast.
