PILOT BOAT OPERATIONS MANAGER

The Atlantic Pilotage Authority was established in 1972 pursuant to the Pilotage Act. The mandate of the Atlantic Pilotage Authority is to establish, operate, maintain and administer, in the interest of safety, an efficient Pilotage service within the designated waters of the Atlantic region. The Authority currently maintains a fleet of eight pilot boats within the Atlantic region. We are currently seeking a Pilot Boat Operations Manager to join our team in Halifax, Nova Scotia. The Pilot Boat Operations Manager will be responsible for managing the operations, maintenance, and crewing of pilot launches and will be expected to provide relief and assistance to other managers. Some of the primary duties will include:

  • Manage the daily operations of the Authority’s pilot boat fleet
  • Oversee preventative maintenance and repair programs for the fleet
  • Directs and delegates work plans for the maintenance, repair or refits of vessels
  • Establish objectives and priorities, assign, identify and recommend work plans related to pilot vessels
  • Prepare various reports for the CEO and Board of Directors
  • Investigates incidents involving damage to pilot vessels, other ships, or wharf facilities
  • Ensures the Authority complies with regulations including Safety of Life at Sea, Occupational Health and Safety guidelines, Canadian Shipping Act, Canada Labour Code, Transport Canada Ships Safety Regulations, Environmental Regulations and other applicable legislation and regulations

Reporting to the CEO, the ideal candidate will be a highly motivated individual who possesses the following attributes:

  • excellent interpersonal skills
  • clear and precise verbal and written communications
  • ability to analyze, plan and schedule activities
  • skilled at prioritizing tasks to be completed
  • ability to cope with diverse and unpredictable situations that need quick and sound judgment
  • strong computer skills, including familiarity with Microsoft Office and database applications

The candidate must be able to work in compliance with existing company policies for safety, environmental and human resources management within a unionized environment.

The candidate must have training, knowledge, and experience in the Marine Engineering field, and experience in vessel operation and construction/repair. The ideal candidate will have knowledge of the Canadian marine industry and commercial shipbuilding. Previous supervisory or managerial experience would be an asset. The successful candidate will be required to travel within the Atlantic Provinces.
